The D'Elia family moved to Syracuse, New York from Naples, Italy in 1953. Sheri was the fifth person in her father's family to be born in the United States. The family brought from Italy a deep appreciation and love of the arts. Sheri's paternal grandfather was a respected artist and sculptor in Syracuse and her great grandfather was a well loved musician, violinist in Italy.
Drawing was a large part of Sheri's childhood, "Almost everyone in my family can draw exceptionally well. As kids, my siblings and I were drawing all the time, for fun and as a past-time. With just paper and pencil we would spend hours and hours lost in drawings." |
| Upon graduating with her B.A. in Visual Art, She pursued a freelance career as an illustrator working mainly as a portrait artist. During this time she became a certified fitness instructor and taught a variety of classes including step aerobics, cardio kick boxing and weight training. After 3 years of struggling with a freelance career, she chose to get her degree in Art Education. |
Sheri worked as a public school art teacher from 1994 - 2005. She continued to create art and had several shows in area venues, including two solos shows. In 1997 she wrote the curriculum for a high school computer graphics course, which lead to 8 years experience teaching photoshop, web design, animation, and digital video shooting and editing. She also taught studio art and photography. |
She resigned from teaching after deciding that is was time to do something different. She moved to Frederick, Maryland in 2005, where she engaged in a patchwork of part-time jobs including web design, graphic design, video editing, teaching an online photoshop course and teaching for an after-school arts program. She served food and drink a the former music venue, The West-Side Cafe, where she met a host of musicians and artists which led to several art opportunities. Eventually she landed an exciting job as the photo and multimedia assistant for the Frederick News-Post. A daily newspaper where she worked with the photo staff to create online multimedia with photo and video.
However, the pull to move back to New York State was strong.
She is currently living in Ithaca, N.Y. where the beautiful landscape, vibrant art scene and political culture of the area have often appealed to her over the years. She is employed by Cornell University and getting to know the lay of the land while working on a variety of personal art projects. She is in the process of starting an Ithaca art group for general artist-to-artist support and group exhibits. More news on that to come!
